Job Overview

We are seeking a highly experienced and dedicated Mine Closure and Rehabilitation Specialist to lead the development, planning, and execution of comprehensive mine closure and land rehabilitation strategies for our operations in Kédougou, Senegal. This is a critical, forward-looking role that ensures our mining activities conclude with responsible environmental restoration, contributing to sustainable land use and community benefit long after mining ceases. Key Responsibilities

• Develop, update, and manage the Life of Mine Closure Plan, ensuring it is a dynamic document that evolves with operational changes.
• Lead the design and technical specification of rehabilitation works, including landform design, soil management, water management, and revegetation strategies.
• Coordinate and oversee all closure-related studies, including hydrological, geotechnical, ecological, and social baseline assessments.
• Prepare detailed cost estimates and financial assurance models for closure liabilities, working closely with the finance department.
• Manage relationships with regulatory bodies, ensuring all closure plans and reports are submitted compliantly and on time.
• Develop and implement stakeholder engagement plans related to closure, working with community relations teams to incorporate local knowledge and aspirations.
• Supervise and monitor the execution of rehabilitation trials and full-scale closure activities, ensuring they meet design specifications and performance criteria.
• Establish and manage a comprehensive monitoring and verification program to track the success of rehabilitation efforts over the long term.
• Provide expert advice to operational and project teams on design and practices that facilitate cost-effective and successful future closure.
• Prepare and present regular reports on closure planning and progress to senior management and the Board.

Required Skills

• Expert knowledge of mine closure principles, international best practices (e.g., ICMM), and Senegalese environmental legislation.
• Strong project management skills with a proven ability to manage complex, multi-disciplinary projects from conception to completion.
• Excellent technical skills in areas such as geotechnical engineering, hydrology, soil science, and ecology as they apply to land rehabilitation.
• Proficiency in relevant software for modeling, design, and project management (e.g., GIS, AutoCAD, MS Project).
• Outstanding communication, negotiation, and stakeholder engagement skills, with fluency in French and professional proficiency in English.
• Strong analytical and financial modeling skills for cost estimation and liability management.
• Ability to work independently, lead teams, and influence decision-making at all organizational levels.
• A deep commitment to environmental protection and sustainable development.

Education

A Master’s degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Mine Rehabilitation, Geology, or a closely related field is required. Additional professional certifications such as Professional Engineer (P.Eng.), Project Management Professional (PMP), or specific environmental auditor credentials are highly desirable and will be considered a significant advantage.

Experience

A minimum of 8-10 years of direct, hands-on experience in mine closure planning, environmental management, or land rehabilitation within the international mining industry is essential. Candidates must demonstrate a proven track record of developing and implementing closure plans for large-scale mining operations. Experience working in West Africa, and specifically an understanding of the Sahelian environment, will be highly regarded. Prior experience in managing regulatory submissions and engaging with diverse stakeholder groups, including local communities and government agencies, is mandatory.
