Job Overview

We are seeking a dedicated Sustainable Fisheries Management Specialist to join our marine conservation team in Foundiougne, Senegal. This position offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to the conservation of Senegal’s marine resources while supporting sustainable livelihoods for local fishing communities. The successful candidate will play a key role in developing and implementing fisheries management plans, conducting research on fish stocks and fishing practices, and building capacity among local fishers and community organizations.

The Sustainable Fisheries Management Specialist will work closely with government agencies, research institutions, fishing communities, and other stakeholders to promote sustainable fishing practices and improve fisheries governance. This position requires a combination of technical expertise in fisheries science, practical experience in community engagement, and strong project management skills. The ideal candidate will be passionate about marine conservation and committed to finding solutions that balance environmental protection with socio-economic development.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop and implement sustainable fisheries management plans in collaboration with local communities and government authorities
• Conduct research on fish stock assessments, fishing effort, and ecosystem impacts of fishing activities
• Design and oversee monitoring programs to track the status of fish stocks and fishing practices
• Build capacity among local fishers and community organizations in sustainable fishing techniques and resource management
• Facilitate stakeholder consultations and participatory planning processes for fisheries management
• Develop and deliver training programs on sustainable fishing practices, data collection, and compliance monitoring
• Collaborate with government agencies to support the development and implementation of fisheries policies and regulations
• Prepare technical reports, scientific papers, and communication materials on fisheries management issues
• Manage project budgets, timelines, and reporting requirements for fisheries conservation initiatives
• Establish and maintain partnerships with research institutions, NGOs, and private sector actors working in fisheries

Required Skills

• Strong knowledge of fisheries science, stock assessment methods, and ecosystem-based management approaches
• Experience with participatory approaches to natural resource management and community engagement
• Excellent project management skills, including budgeting, planning, and monitoring
• Strong analytical skills and experience with statistical analysis of fisheries data
• Ability to work effectively with diverse stakeholders, including fishing communities, government officials, and researchers
• Excellent communication and facilitation skills, with proficiency in French and local languages
• Experience with GIS applications and spatial analysis in fisheries management
• Knowledge of international fisheries management frameworks and best practices
• Ability to conduct field work in remote coastal areas and adapt to challenging environmental conditions
• Strong commitment to conservation principles and sustainable development goals

Education

Master’s degree in Marine Biology, Fisheries Science, Environmental Management, Natural Resource Management, or related field. PhD preferred but not required. Additional certifications in fisheries management, environmental impact assessment, or project management are advantageous.

Experience

Minimum 5-8 years of professional experience in fisheries management, marine conservation, or sustainable resource management. Experience working in West African coastal communities and familiarity with Senegal’s fisheries sector is highly desirable. Demonstrated experience in project management, stakeholder engagement, and scientific research related to fisheries.
