Job Overview

This position is part of IUCN’s initiative to combat overfishing and habitat degradation in the Casamance region. The Marine Conservation Researcher will lead field studies, analyze data, and collaborate with stakeholders to implement conservation strategies. The role requires a blend of scientific expertise and community engagement to ensure long-term environmental and socio-economic impact.

Key Responsibilities

• Conduct field research on marine biodiversity, including species monitoring and habitat assessments.
• Design and implement conservation programs in collaboration with local fishing communities.
• Analyze ecological data to inform policy recommendations and project evaluations.
• Prepare scientific reports and presentations for internal and external stakeholders.
• Coordinate with government agencies and NGOs to align conservation efforts with national environmental goals.

Required Skills

• Advanced knowledge of marine ecology and conservation methodologies.
• Proficiency in data analysis software (e.g., R, ArcGIS) and report writing.
• Strong interpersonal skills for community engagement and stakeholder collaboration.
• Fluency in French and basic understanding of local languages (e.g., Diola, Mandinka).
• Experience in project management and grant reporting.

Education

• Master’s Degree in Marine Biology, Environmental Science, or a related field.
• Certifications in field research techniques or conservation management are advantageous.

Experience

• 3-5 years of experience in marine conservation or environmental research.
• Proven track record in designing and executing conservation projects in West Africa.

Salary

1,200,000 – 1,800,000 XOF per month, commensurate with experience.
