Job Overview

UK-Med is seeking experienced and compassionate High Dependency Unit (HDU) Nurses to join its humanitarian emergency response register. This role is ideal for healthcare professionals who are passionate about delivering high-quality patient care in crisis and disaster settings across Africa and other international locations.

Successful candidates will be deployed internationally on fixed-term contracts during humanitarian emergencies and medical responses. Most deployments range between 4 and 12 weeks, with candidates expected to be available for rapid deployment at short notice.

As part of a multidisciplinary medical team, HDU Nurses will provide advanced nursing care for critically ill patients requiring close monitoring and support in complex emergency healthcare environments.


Key Responsibilities

Patient Care & Clinical Support

  • Deliver high-quality nursing care to critically ill patients in HDU settings
  • Monitor and manage patients requiring advanced observation and clinical support
  • Assist in stabilizing deteriorating patients in emergency and humanitarian environments
  • Ensure patient-centred care and adherence to clinical best practices

Emergency & Humanitarian Response

  • Support emergency medical response operations during crises and disasters
  • Work collaboratively with multidisciplinary healthcare teams
  • Adapt quickly to challenging and resource-limited environments
  • Ensure safe and effective healthcare delivery during deployments

Capacity Building & Training

  • Mentor and support local healthcare workers and field staff
  • Assist in training Ministry of Health personnel and partner organizations
  • Contribute to strengthening local health systems during humanitarian responses

Compliance & Professional Standards

  • Maintain high professional and ethical standards
  • Follow safeguarding, infection prevention, and humanitarian healthcare protocols
  • Support continuous learning and knowledge sharing within the team

Qualifications and Experience

  • Registered and qualified Nurse with HDU or critical care experience
  • Experience managing critically ill patients in high-dependency settings
  • Minimum availability for deployment of 4–6 weeks
  • Humanitarian or emergency response experience is highly desirable
  • Additional language skills are considered an advantage
