Job Overview

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Mine Closure and Rehabilitation Specialist to join our team in Kédougou. This pivotal role is responsible for developing, implementing, and managing comprehensive mine closure plans and post-mining land rehabilitation strategies. Key Responsibilities

• Develop, update, and manage detailed Life of Mine Closure Plans in accordance with national regulations and international standards (e.g., IFC Performance Standards).
• Lead the design and implementation of land rehabilitation, re-vegetation, and soil stabilization programs for disturbed mining areas.
• Coordinate with geotechnical, hydrogeological, and environmental teams to address closure-related risks, including pit lake management, waste rock dump stability, and water quality.
• Manage the mine closure financial assurance (provision) model and ensure adequate funds are secured for future rehabilitation liabilities.
• Engage with key stakeholders, including government agencies, local communities, and NGOs, to communicate closure plans and incorporate feedback.
• Oversee contractor performance for rehabilitation earthworks, planting, and monitoring programs.
• Prepare and submit all required regulatory reports and applications related to mine closure and rehabilitation.
• Establish and maintain a long-term environmental monitoring program to assess the success of rehabilitation efforts.
• Integrate closure planning into active mine operations to enable progressive rehabilitation and reduce final closure liabilities.
• Stay abreast of emerging technologies and best practices in mine closure and ecological restoration.

Required Skills

• Expert knowledge of mine closure principles, environmental legislation, and rehabilitation techniques.
• Strong project management skills with experience in managing multi-disciplinary teams and contractors.
• Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities, particularly in geotechnical and hydrological contexts.
• Proficiency in environmental modeling software and GIS applications for closure planning.
• Outstanding communication and stakeholder engagement skills, with fluency in French and professional proficiency in English.
• Ability to develop detailed technical reports, closure cost estimates, and management plans.
• Strong commitment to safety, environmental protection, and sustainable development.

Education

A Master’s degree in Environmental Engineering, Environmental Science, Geotechnical Engineering, Mining Engineering with an environmental focus, or a closely related field is required. Additional certifications in Project Management (PMP) or specific mine closure training are highly advantageous.

Experience

A minimum of 7 years of direct experience in mine closure planning, environmental rehabilitation, or related fields within the mining or heavy industrial sector. Proven experience in West Africa, particularly Senegal, is a significant advantage. Candidates must demonstrate a track record of successfully developing closure plans, managing rehabilitation projects, and navigating complex regulatory environments.
